SMART Thinking: Achieve Your Business Goals

SMART Thinking: Achieve Your Business Goals

We all know how tough running a business can be. There is so much to do every day, it can be difficult to remember what you were trying to achieve with your business in the first place. You need to stay focused to ensure success, and the best way to do this is to set goals for your business.

A Goal Without A Plan Is Just A Wish

If you don’t have a plan for making your goals happen, then the sad truth is that they may never be achieved. Fortunately, there are planning methods you can employ. One method is a professionally written business plan. A business plan provides an overview of the fundamentals of your business concept, SWOT analysis, marketing strategy, management structure, financials and also where you want your business to be in a few years’ time and how you intend to make it happen.

The SMART Method

When determining your business goals, there are five elements you should consider, all of which are described by the SMART method: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time Based. Specific keeps you focused on your goals; Measurable enables you to see how well you are progressing towards them; Attainable ensures your goals are realistic; Relevant means they will deliver a real benefit for your business; and Time Based sets a deadline for their achievement.

Reward Each Achievement

It can help with motivation if you don’t wait to celebrate the achievement of a goal, but reward yourself when you move one step closer to it. Setting goal milestones and celebrating little successes will make the journey towards your ultimate goal that much easier.

But if goal setting and planning seems like too much work, then visualise just where your business will be in a few years’ time. Will it be stagnating because you didn’t plan ahead, or will you be making more sales, cutting overheads, expanding your product lines and employing staff simply because you took the time to set goals and made plans to achieve them?
